Plantation Christmas

Friday, Whitney and I took the day off from school and had the best time together at Chippokes Plantation in Surry County, at their yearly arts and crafts festival!  The weather was cool and crisp, with plenty of warm sunshine.  Whitney was introduced to a new musical instrument, a bowed psaltery, and ended up buying one for herself!  She's been wanting to learn an instrument that is unusual and portable, and so she quickly took a liking to it.  It is beautifully handmade by Bob Bellamy, from cherry and cedar trees cut from his grandfather's farm.  What a great time we had talking to Bob and his wife, Wendy.

If you'd like to know what a bowed psaltery is, here is a video introduction.  It was the only video I could find that represented the instrument well. The other videos just don't do it justice.

Once again, I've created a slide show to share some of what we saw during the day.  I didn't take many pictures, so it is somewhat short.  The music is from Bob and Wendy's Soft and Tenderly CD, and features them playing the harp and hammered dulcimer.  The last picture in the slide show is Whitney with her new bowed psaltery. :)
